Many countries aim to improve their living standards through economic development, but some important social values are lost as a result. Do you think the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages?
It has always been the target and duty of the authorities to lead their people to live a better life, and thus developing economy becomes the priority of most governments, which consequently results in the loss of some social values. I think its benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
Undoubtedly, the rapid development of economy is likely to drive people to focus on the accumulation of materials, ignoring the fading away of some precious values. For example, the over exploiting of natural resources in some developing countries indeed helps to get rid of poverty, but it meanwhile leads people to forget the value that the relationship between humans and nature should be in a harmonious state.
However, it has to be admitted that without the continuous improvement of economic level, a government does not own the financial ability to solve some challenging issues existing domestically, such as climate change, high crime rate, and even homelessness and hunger in some certain areas. Only when enough finances are invested can these urgent problems be tackled once and for all, which is significantly beneficial for the well-being of citizens and the governance of the authorities.
Besides, the world is always shifting, which is an eternal tendency and cannot be denied by any individual. Even though the government does not put emphasis on economic development, the gradual disappearance of some traditional values and the emerging of some new values are a must in light of social development. Furthermore, with the increase of economic level, people can spare more time and are more willing to consider spiritual aspects, like retrieving valuable social values.
To sum up, from what has been discussed above, it is easy to draw the conclusion that economic development should be encouraged despite its adverse effect on remaining certain social values, because it is intimately bound up with the living quality of humans.
